ONCIDIUM ALLIANCE
GROWING HINTS

ONCIDIUMS
FOR SALE
The Oncidiums covers a large variety and are mostly grown in pots and like conditions similar to cattleyas. The large racemes carry many flowers of quite vibrant and contrasting colours which make the plants eye catching.  Their pseudo bulbs are elliptical with leaves on the top and new
shoots coming from the base.

Oncidium sphacelatum
or dancing ladies is a species that grows well outside in Brisbane.  It will take full sun and is best sited on rocks.  It sends out multiple 40cm long spikes of yellow flowers in a shower of sunshine in November.

Brassia
orchids have large, spider-shaped flowers, hence their other name Spider Orchids.  Brassias are natives to the area from Florida to northern parts of South America, they thrive in tropical rainforests.  Pseudobulbs are usually large, elliptical to oblong single or two-leaved pseudobulbs. Flowers are of whitish, greenish, yellowish and brownish shades.

Miltonia and Miltoniopsis
are called pansy orchids as they resemble pansies with their big lip.  They have been used to hybridise with Oncidiums to increase their flower size.  They do tend to have a creeping habit so are better grown on a horizontal bamboo shaft or log or a shallow pot.  Miltonia have flatter pseudo bulbs with 2 leaves on top and Miltoniopsis have fatter pseudo bulbs with one leaf.  Miltonia are warmer growing and Miltoniopsis cooler growing.

Odontoglossums
are cool growing orchids and have been hybridised with warm growing oncidium alliance orchids that will grow in our climate.

Beallara
are c
ompact growing, medium-sized (30-45cm) epiphytic with upright, 20-30cm long and 2-3cm wide leaves. New growth appears from the base of pseudobulbs. Oval-shaped, slightly flattened pseudobulbs are partially covered by a pair of green, leafed sheaths, New flowering stems arise from the axils of young, mature pseudobulbs and the leafed sheaths.

Toluminia
is a miniature variety and the colours are very broad and varied. They can be grown in small pots in fine orchid bark, or attached to a host such as cork bark, small pieces of bottlebrush stem or small pieces of aged fence palings. The roots love the rough lined texture and soon become strongly attached.  Locate plants facing a northerly direction, as they seem to prefer it. They enjoy high light and plenty of water if grown on a backing medium, watering two or three times a day in summer is very beneficial as they love to get water and dry out quickly.

Grow
in orchid bark and provide enough bright filtered light but not direct sunlight. Ideal temperatures are Brisbane outside where they get plenty of airflow and humidity in summer. Water when the bark is dry and ensure that all water drains away, preventing the plant sitting wet. Reduce watering in winter months when the lower temperature encourages flowering. They don’t really have a dormant period like other orchids.

Propagation
Mature plants may be divided when the plant overgrows its container.  Repot after flowering has finished and in the warmer seasons.   Each division should have at least 3 older pseudobulbs, to support new growth and reduce stress after repotting.  The size of the pot should be relative to the size of the plant.

There has been many inter-generic hybrids available since the 1980’s
